Welcome to inspectorTerry.com where we help you understand the building codes. Within these pages you will find various articles, diagrams and links that will help you get a better grasp on what the building code is trying to say and why.
inspectorTerry.comis intended to help people of all abilities. This means that some of it will be written so that a person with little or no knowledge of building codes can navigate through and understand it. For the advanced “Code Geeks” this may become almost intolerable at times. Likewise there are some topics that must be delved into with a great deal of professional knowledge. This would tend to overwhelm the “Code Novice”. I have added Tags to help you better navigate without getting bogged down in the basics or overwhelmed by the particulars, unless of coarse you want to.
inspectorTerry.com is put together using what I call “Code Logic”. This means that it has been divided into categories that best fit the logic you would use to build or resolve problems as they relate to the building codes.
For instance; if you needed to know whether a secondary drain is required on an evaporative coil, in an attic furnace, at a home, you would look in Residential because it is a home or residence then Mechanical as heating and venting equipment is covered by the mechanical section of the codes.
If on the other hand, you needed to know how many restrooms are required in a restaurant and how to install the handicap accessories. First you would look in Commercial for the number of restrooms and how many handicap accessible units are required for an A-2 (restaurant) occupancy. Then you would look in Accessibility for accessible restroom requirements and then to Plumbing for the fixture, supply and drain requirements.
We will be designing our site to be used in much the same manner as the codes. Using the same type of “Code Logic” to separate out the categories and sub-categories. Where possible we will cross reference for you. The codes are however thousands of pages and we have limited space here. Do not expect to find all of your answers here but rather an explanation of where and how to find your answers within the codes.
